APPLETON, Wis. (WFRV) – Drivers in the Fox Valley who rely on the Richmond Street Bridge will need to plan alternate routes as the overpass closes for reconstruction through mid-October.
The bridge is being converted into a diverging diamond interchange as part of the 23-mile Interstate 41 expansion to six lanes, a project expected to be completed in 2030. The redesigned interchange will widen the overpass to handle more traffic and improve access for bicyclists and pedestrians.

Officials with the Wisconsin Department of Transportation say specialized overhead signage is critical for the diverging diamond design to function properly.
“These have a long lead time, and the diverging diamond interchange cannot function without those signs in place,” said Bryan Lest, WisDOT’s I-41 project manager. “With a typical interchange, you can use temporary signals or signage, but with a diverging diamond and overhead signs, it’s more unique.
