Two Mobile County lynching victims honored in Prichard

PRICHARD, Ala. (WKRG) — Mobile County’s first and last lynching victims from the “Era of Racial Terror” between 1877 and 1950 were honored with blue plaques in Prichard along the Historic Whistler Bike Trail.

“Killing was not a response to any kind of resistance, but it was intended to be a warning,” Mobile County Community Remembrance Project Merceria Ludgood said. “And that’s what a lot of this was, to make an example of people so that it would intimidate other people who were trying to exercise their constitutional rights. “

There are nine documented lynchings in Mobile County during this time period.

“What made it a lynching was that there was no legal action in his death,” Ludgood said. “And we’ve had people who’ve been railroaded in court. But that’s not what happened here. They would charge the people who committed to the lynching were charged, arrested and charged, but ultimately no one was held accountable for his death.”…
