Harry Whitehorse International Wood Sculpture Festival Returns to June 19-27 in Monona

From June 19-27, the shores of Lake Monona in Monona will host the Harry Whitehorse International Wood Sculpture Festival, a week-long outdoor artist residency held in partnership with Friends of San Damiano. The event brings together internationally recognized sculptors to create large-scale works on site, share past pieces, and engage with the community throughout the week.

The festival is culturally and artistically significant as the first international wood sculpture festival dedicated to an Indigenous artist. It honors Ho-Chunk sculptor from Monona, Harry Whitehorse, whose work was rooted in land-based traditions and cultural continuity. The festival centers Indigenous perspectives while encouraging cross-cultural exchange and increasing public understanding of Indigenous art and history.

What makes this festival unique is its combination of Indigenous leadership with both traditional and contemporary carving practices from around the world. Artists work side by side in an open setting, creating an experience that is collaborative, accessible, and grounded in place.

While in the area, visitors can also explore a variety of local dining options, from a casual breakfast at Monona Bakery and Eatery, known for its fresh pastries and cozy neighborhood feel, to a relaxed lunch at Forage Kitchen, offering a menu of fresh items and seasonal favorites, and a sit-down dinner at Buck & Honey’s, a popular spot for classic American dishes in a warm, inviting setting. For those looking to unwind, Waypoint Public House offers a laid-back atmosphere for drinks with a local feel, while Monona Bait and Ice Cream Shop is a go-to spot for a classic sweet treat by the water. For those planning to stay for the week or even just a few days, nearby hotel options include Country Inn & Suites Monona, AmericInn by Wyndham, and Avid Hotel Monona by IHG, all offering convenient access to the festival…
