UAB doctor helps rename common hormonal disorder affecting millions of women

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) – One of the most common hormonal disorders in women has a new name, and a UAB doctor helped make it happen.

What was known as PCOS for years is now PMOS.

PCOS — or Polycystic Ovary Syndrome — affects 10-15% of women. UAB’s Dr. Ricardo Azziz says the name dates back to the 1970s but can be misleading. He says many patients hear it and automatically think they must have cysts, but that’s not always the case…
