Semmes looking to improve road safety after teen’s car flipped three times into ditch

SEMMES, Ala. (WKRG) — A road in Semmes is known for its twists and turns— and having many accidents.

The most recent crash — a teen’s car, which flipped off the road three times. Now, officials are looking for ways to improve its safety.

The City of Semmes just had an Infrastructure Committee Meeting this week. In that meeting, officials said Fire Tower Road is a problem, and they are considering putting up guardrails.

Two days before that meeting, a normal night almost turned deadly for Ella Ferguson. On her way home, she missed the turn on Fire Tower Road and Semmes Drive East, flipping her car three times down a 30-foot ditch.

“There [were] no blinking lights, no lights at all. As my headlights hit [and lit up the turn,] it was too late for me to do anything,” Ferguson said.

Ferguson was trapped in her car while it was smoking, and bystanders called 911.

“I was fully conscious and aware of everything that was going on, but it was just really, really scary,” Ferguson continued…
