Editorial: Lorraine sign of blight

Close-up photos of the shuttered Lorraine Hotel in downtown Toledo tell us how dangerously close we came to a massive shower of bricks from a multistory height.

Luckily, the separation of bricks from the structure of the front of the hotel was noticed in time to let the Toledo Fire and Rescue Department rope off the building to protect passing drivers and pedestrians on Jefferson Avenue.

Neglect of older buildings is approaching epidemic level in Toledo, and the Lorraine is a high-profile example of how Toledo is abused and taken advantage of by can’t-be-bothered out-of-town owners…
