Bourbon and beyond: Distillery hopping in Kentucky

Right about the time Charlotte became a craft-brewery town, I quit drinking beer, primarily to cut back on carbohydrates and lose weight. A friend turned me on to bourbon and that became my “go-to” drink.

Years later, my wife Karen and I went to Nashville to see a concert at the Ryman Auditorium and to visit family. Her brother Dave caught wind of our plans to tour some Kentucky distilleries and volunteered to be our chauffeur. (He drives a Porsche Cayenne SUV, so how could we say no?) To make a long story short, we had a great time and hoped to return.

We have yet to get back to Nashville, but we recently visited Louisville, Kentucky, which is just 40 miles from Bardstown, Kentucky, the heart of Bourbon Country. This time, traveling with two friends from college, we booked an all-inclusive, private tour with the Kentucky Bourbon Boys. It allowed us to choose from nine Bardstown-area distilleries, a bottling facility and a barrel factory. Our tour guide picked us up at our hotel in a comfortable Sprinter van stocked with bottled water, snacks and lunch.
