BOCA RATON, Fla. (CBS12) — Firefighters in Boca Raton recently responded to an e-scooter battery fire that ignited while charging.

Officials with the Boca Raton Fire Rescue announced on April 25 that this recent incident is a clear reminder of the risks tied to lithium-ion batteries, which power many e-bikes and e-scooters now commonly used across South Florida. While the devices are convenient and popular, fire officials warn that improper charging or damaged batteries can quickly turn dangerous.

According to BRFR, lithium-ion batteries can overheat, ignite, or even explode if they are used with the wrong charger, overcharged, or exposed to heat. In many cases, fires start indoors – often in homes or garages — where they can spread quickly and put lives at risk…
