Early Monday morning, the National Weather Service office in Miami lit up the marine wires with a special warning that turned an ordinary outing into a high-alert situation for South Florida boaters. The advisory zeroed in on Atlantic waters from Deerfield Beach down to Ocean Reef, along with the nearby coastal zones and Biscayne Bay, and urged marinas and recreational boaters to be ready to shelter fast as conditions shifted.
What the Warning Covers
According to NWS Miami, the bulletin applied to waters from Deerfield Beach to Ocean Reef, FL, offshore from 20 to 60 nautical miles, excluding the territorial waters of the Bahamas. It also included the coastal waters out to 20 nautical miles and Biscayne Bay through 12:45 AM EDT. Forecasters highlighted wind gusts in excess of 34 knots and steep waves as the main threats, and urged mariners to “take protective actions” and head for safe harbor. The alert specified that waterspouts and hail were not expected with this particular setup.
