Southwest Florida’s high cost of living

PORT CHARLOTTE — A Southwest Florida family of four with two children must earn more than $104,000 a year to afford basic necessities and childcare, according to a new report from United Way.

For years, United Way and other aid organizations have been using the term ALICE, which stands for Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed populations in the United States. The threshold for ALICE families are above the Federal Poverty Level, but below the basic cost of living.
