FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) – A phone scam has been making the rounds in the Fort Wayne area “with increasing frequency,” the Fort Wayne Police Department warned.
On Thursday, the department said in a release that people impersonating authorities have been making calls to try to get money from those on the other end of the line. Victims who have reported the calls said the impersonator claims the victim has outstanding citations or warrants. When the victim denies involvement or expresses confusion, the caller claims the issue may be related to a forged signature.
In instances where the victim stays on the line, a second person often joins the call impersonating a higher-ranking officer to back up the fraudulent claims. They press the victim to pay a bond or fee to avoid arrest while the alleged signature issue is investigated. If the victim attempts to hang up or question the legitimacy of the claims, the FWPD warned that the impersonators may become aggressive, threatening arrest and claiming they are able to track the victim’s location through their cell phone via GPS…
