A Houston father has been found guilty of capital murder in the deaths of his twin infant daughters. Fernando Vega was convicted in January and received a 40-year prison sentence in connection with the tragic deaths of six-week-old twins Massail and Mirena.
The twins’ mother, Angelina Belinda Calderon, was also sentenced to eight years after being charged with injury to a child. The infants were discovered unresponsive in their Houston home in October 2023 following a 911 call reporting they were not breathing.
Initially, authorities noted no visible trauma, but an autopsy later revealed the twins died from multiple blunt force injuries. Further investigation uncovered that both girls were malnourished and suffered some injuries that were days or weeks old.
In a separate but equally harrowing case overseas, Nicole Blain, 30, was convicted Wednesday for the murder of her 19-day-old daughter, Thea Jane Wison, after a trial in Glasgow’s High Court. The infant sustained severe injuries, including three skull fractures, brain damage, and bleeding behind the eyes, consistent with violent shaking and being slammed against hard surfaces.
Footage from Blain’s gender reveal party earlier in 2023 has come to light, showing her visibly upset upon learning she was expecting a girl. The video captures Blain aggressively popping a balloon filled with pink confetti while arguing with a family member.
Following the infant’s death, Blain attempted to conceal what happened by claiming another child in the apartment was responsible. However, pathologists ruled out any accidental injury caused by the other child.
Thea was reportedly healthy at birth on June 25, 2023. Blain, who had been out on bail, broke down in tears as she was taken into custody and is scheduled to appear in court again next month. These heartbreaking cases highlight the tragic consequences of child abuse and the ongoing efforts of the justice system to hold perpetrators accountable.
