Fresno Courts Overwhelmed: Judge Decries ‘Absurd’ Criminal Caseloads

FRESNO, Calif. — Overcrowded court calendars, lengthy wait times and repeated continuances underscored the mounting strain on Fresno County Superior Court Wednesday morning, Aug. 5, as judges and public defenders described the challenges of managing an increasing number of criminal cases with limited time and resources.

During proceedings in Department 1, Judge Jon Kapetan addressed the size of the day’s calendar, expressing frustration at how quickly the number of scheduled matters had grown.

“It’s absurd,” Kapetan said. “Last night I had 52 cases, and this morning it jumped to 76.”…
