DALLAS (KRLD) — A new study says singles in Frisco, Plano and McKinney now need more than $109,000 a year to live comfortably as housing costs and rapid suburban growth continue pushing expenses higher across North Texas.
The SmartAsset report, based on the latest cost-of-living data, ranks the three Collin County cities tied for 29th nationally among the 100 largest U.S. cities for the highest salary required by a single adult. Researchers applied the 50/30/20 budgeting rule — 50 percent on needs such as housing and food, 30 percent on wants, and 20 percent on savings and debt — after taxes. The pre-tax figure for one person in these suburbs sits just over $109,000 annually. For a family of four, the comfortable household income climbs above $230,000.
Median household incomes in the area remain among the highest in Texas — Frisco at roughly $145,000 and McKinney at $124,000 — meaning many families come closer to that comfortable threshold than singles do.
