Golf cart driver arrested in wee hours near Stonecrest

A 66-year-old golf cart driver was arrested early Wednesday morning after a deputy spotted him traveling on the wrong side of U.S. Hwy. 441 near Stonecrest in Summermfield.

Matthew Goff of Summerfield was driving a maroon Club Car golf cart at about 2 a.m. when a Marion County Sheriff’s Office deputy observed him traveling in the lane designated for opposing traffic on U.S. Hwy. 441 near Southeast 173rd Street. The deputy noted the golf cart was creating a hazard for oncoming vehicles.

The deputy initiated a traffic stop at Southeast 109th Terrace Road and Southeast 173rd Street. Goff, a native of Cincinnati, Ohio, handed the deputy an identification card and admitted he did not possess a valid driver’s license.

A records check through the Florida Crime Information Center revealed Goff’s driving privileges had been revoked and he was designated as a habitual traffic offender on March 23, 2023.
