Capital Grille closes as Darden cuts 28 more restaurants

A fine dining staple in the northern Chicago suburbs is about to go dark, and it is happening faster than most regulars may realize.

The Capital Grille will permanently close its Westfield Old Orchard Mall location in Skokie, Illinois on May 31, just three years after opening in the 9,000 square-foot space that previously housed McCormick & Schmick’s. The restaurant confirmed the closure, and its parent company Darden Restaurants said the decision came after careful consideration and does not reflect on the quality of the staff.

What made this location worth visiting

The Capital Grille built its identity on dry-aged steaks, fresh seafood and an extensive wine program, offering a level of dining that stood apart from most suburban mall options. The Skokie location occupied a sprawling space on the southeast corner of the mall when it opened in March 2023, and it quickly became one of the more prominent fine dining options in the area. Four other Illinois locations remain open in Lombard, Rosemont, Schaumburg and Streeterville, and Darden confirmed there are no plans to close any of them at this time…
