Dog owners in the Valley will get a rare shot at bringing their leashed pups through the Phoenix Zoo this fall, as the nonprofit has announced a one-day event called Tails on the Trails set for November 14. The event runs from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and marks a temporary break from the zoo’s usual no-pets policy, opening its trails to registered dogs alongside their human companions.
A One-Day Exception to Zoo Rules
According to KTAR News 92.3 FM, which first reported the event, Phoenix Zoo members will get standard early entry starting at 8 a.m. on November 14, ahead of the general dog-friendly window. Dogs must be at least 6 months old and up to date on their vaccinations to attend, and the zoo says it will turn away any dog that is sick, injured, in heat, aggressive or highly reactive. Every dog must also be kept on a nonretractable leash no longer than six feet while moving along the designated paths, a restriction that lines up with Arizona’s own leash law. Under Arizona Revised Statutes Section 11-1012, dogs in public parks and at public events must be physically restrained on a leash of that same length and kept under the handler’s direct control.
Normally, pets and emotional support animals are barred entirely from the Phoenix Zoo grounds. Per the zoo’s own guidance on what to know before visiting, that rule exists to comply with USDA and Association of Zoos & Aquariums regulations, which is exactly what makes Tails on the Trails a genuine, if temporary, exception rather than a routine offering.
What’s Off-Limits, and What It Costs
Not every corner of the 125-acre zoo will welcome dogs. The zoo’s updated safety rules explicitly rope off 10 attractions to visiting pets, including the walk-through aviaries, Monkey Village, Giraffe Encounter, Camels, Goat Yard, Savanna Grill, Critter Corner, Doornbos Discovery Amphitheater, Lakeside Carousel and the Safari Cruiser. Those exclusions are meant to protect resident wildlife and keep pet-wildlife conflicts from breaking out on busy pathways.
Registration for each dog costs $35, while the humans on the other end of the leash pay standard general admission or use their zoo membership to get in, according to the event’s own listing. The Phoenix Zoo has capped the guest list at 500 dog tickets, a limit meant to keep foot traffic and pet density on the trails manageable throughout the day.
Parades, Pools and Photo Ops
The day’s programming leans into the novelty. A designated Paws and Play Zone will give dogs space to romp with enrichment toys and mingle with each other, while a Cool Canine Club area will offer specialized pools for pups to cool off in the Arizona heat.
