GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Work on the farm spans from sun up to sun down. But at Ed Dunneback and Girls Farm in Alpine Township, the story starts when there was no son around.

“Great grandpa started the farm in 1925,” Stephanie Ginsberg said.

What began as apples, peaches and dairy cows has grown into something far bigger — but the most defining moment in the farm’s history didn’t happen in a harvest season. It happened in 1969, thousands of miles away…
