Chief: Bus with Wyoming students on board was ‘on the verge of tipping over’

COVERT TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — A bus carrying students from a Wyoming charter school found itself on the edge of I-196 in Van Buren County Wednesday morning, “on the verge of tipping over,” the police chief told News 8. No one was hurt.

It happened around 9:30 a.m. on southbound I-196 at mile marker 9, which is near 44th Avenue, in Covert Township. The Covert Township Police Department said the charter bus was carrying students from Vanguard Charter Academy, a K-8 school in Wyoming.

Covert Township Police Chief Jay Allen told News 8 that a side door was open, so the bus driver pulled off to the side of the freeway to close the door. That’s when a semi-truck drove past, he continued, causing enough “gust” to send the bus nearly over the edge.

When officers arrived on scene, they found the bus slightly tilted on the edge of the embankment — “on the verge of tipping over,” Allen said. Crews worked to stabilize the bus and make sure everyone on board was OK. There were no injuries, police confirmed…
