GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — A West Michigan dad lost $5,500 to scammers, believing he was securing his son’s release from the Allegan County Jail.
But it turned out his son wasn’t even in that jail; he was in the Kent County Correctional Facility.
It’s a new version of the well-known “grandparent scam,” where criminals impersonate grandchildren desperate for bail money. But this ruse is more believable because these parents’ adult children really are in jail.
