GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — A little over a year ago, Mary Free Bed Rehabilitation Hospital patient Micah Merren was answering questions from nurses while recovering from a traumatic car crash that left her in a wheelchair with braces on both legs. This summer, she’ll return to the same hospital as a nurse herself.
“I had been driving to a client home for caregiving, got into an accident,” Merren said.
The crash happened the summer before her final year of nursing school.

“The safety mechanism for my car was to drop the dashboard down,” she said. “I looked down, looked at my knee, it left me and it was pulled up close to my chest and just kind of looked wrong, so I sort of — my nursing student brain kicked in, OK, don’t move it in case something’s wrong.”…
