How architects designed Grand Rapids’ amphitheater and its floating canopy look

GRAND RAPIDS, MI – It started with a handful of scribbled lines resembling a first go on an etch-a-sketch.

A doodle of a disk-shaped object, supported by two lines forming a V, towering above a bowl-shaped landscape – simple, abstract lines that revealed little of what was to come.

Two years later, those scribbles have transformed into a sprawling riverfront amphitheater that is set to hold thousands of excited concertgoers in just a few days.

The architects behind Grand Rapids’ new $184 million Acrisure Amphitheater say the designs are deceptively simple at first glance. But scattered throughout the venue are behind-the-scenes innovations that make this venue one-of-a-kind…
