Appleton’s South Oneida Street transforms into Marigold Mile
On Friday afternoon, Readfield 1st grader Miley Hayes was given the most beautiful surprise one can get—her father, Squad Leader Ryan Hayes of Delta Company 2’s 127th Infantry, returned home.
Miley had been watching videos online of kids reuniting with their deployed parents, and her mother, Bre Hayes, discreetly worked with school staff to keep the return plan behind closed doors to make the surprise extra special.
The plan? Play a game that leaves Miley, who would be back from a field trip to the NEW Zoo, standing at the end, and then right away, Squad Leader Hayes would enter.
The planned surprise around 3 p.m. was executed to perfection, as Miley had no idea that her father was standing in the gymnasium ready for the biggest hug he’ll ever get as she leapt into his arms.
The moment played out, with a long hug, loud cheers and an uproar of applause. While Squad Leader Hayes said it was actually bittersweet to get back, it was even greater to see his wife and kids…
