Police officer fatally shoots person during weapons complaint at Appleton bar

APPLETON — An Appleton police officer fatally shot a person early Tuesday morning at Maritime Tavern, on 336 W. Wisconsin Ave.

Around 1:33 a.m., police received a report that shots were fired at the bar, according to the Wisconsin Department of Justice Division of Criminal Investigation.

When officers arrived, an armed person shot at them, the DOJ said. An officer fired his gun at the individual. Lifesaving measures were attempted on scene and the person was transported to a local hospital, where they were pronounced dead, according to the DOJ.

No law enforcement personnel were injured in the incident, the DOJ said. The officer who fired their weapon was placed on administrative leave, per department policy.

The Wisconsin Department of Justice Division of Criminal Investigation is continuing the investigation, and will turn findings over to the Outagamie County District Attorney to determine if any charges will be filed.

Law enforcement are not yet releasing the name of the person killed or the officer who fired their weapon.
