CARLISLE, PA — An airplane pilot died Wednesday after a violent collision with a Pennsylvania State Police helicopter near a runway at a small airport, authorities said.
Two state troopers aboard the helicopter survived. The crash happened at Carlisle airport in central Pennsylvania, where investigators were working to piece together how the aircraft came together so close to the ground.
Lt. Col. George Bivens, the state’s acting police commissioner, said the plane was coming down toward the runway when it veered into the helicopter. He said the helicopter was near the ground at the time of impact.
