After more than 100 years, the Lykens Carnival and Block Party is shutting down, organizers say

LYKENS, Pa. — For the first time in more than a century, the Lykens Fireman’s Carnival and Block Party will not be held this year, according to a Facebook post by Liberty Hose Company No. 2.

The carnival had been part of the fire company’s history for more than 100 years, but the post said there are many reasons behind its decision, including a lack of available volunteers, reduced attendance and profits, and difficulty in booking rides and other third-party attractions for the small-community event.

“We are relying on less manpower to perform more work every year,” the fire company said. “The manpower we do have we want to be able to concentrate on preparing for and responding to emergencies rather than taking 1-2 months preparing for and cleaning up from Block Party.”…
