Caltrans to close portion of I-80. Expect delays, Bay Area commuters

Folks traveling the Bay Bridge this weekend may not be ready for the traffic headache awaiting them, as Caltrans announced it will close a portion of I-80’s eastbound lanes near the neck of the bridge for rehabilitation work.

Starting Friday, April 17, at 11 p.m., until 6 a.m. on Monday, April 20, Caltrans will close about 1.6 miles of lanes on the eastbound I-80 between 17th Street and 4th Street.

The San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge will remain open throughout the duration of the closure, but Caltrans will close the on-ramp connectors from the southbound and northbound U.S. 101 Bayshore Freeway to east I-80.

“The Central and Bayshore freeway viaducts are 71 years old and carry thousands of vehicles daily near the San Francisco–Oakland Bay Bridge corridor. With constant exposure to heavy traffic loads, weather, and seismic demands, the structures require timely rehabilitation to prevent further deterioration,” Caltrans said in its announcement…
