In North Mankato, Minnesota, a 17-year-old high school football player was fatally shot late Sunday night, just hours after sharing a striking Instagram post featuring a large bag of cash. Tyson Michael Goodsell was discovered with a gunshot wound after his car crashed into a townhouse in the area.
Police responded to reports of gunfire around 11 p.m. and soon located a white Hyundai sedan that had collided with a home about five minutes from Goodsell’s family residence. Inside the vehicle, officers found Tyson injured and immediately provided lifesaving efforts before he was transported to Mayo Clinic Health System-Mankato, where he was pronounced dead.
Authorities are treating the incident as a homicide but have yet to determine if the shooting occurred before or after the crash. Investigators have not linked Goodsell’s recent Instagram post-where he posed with a duffel bag filled with $100 bills, captioned “My outfit committed a murder”-to the circumstances surrounding his death.
A family member shared that Goodsell had worked a closing shift at a nearby Papa Murphy’s pizza restaurant earlier that evening. The restaurant closes at 9 p.m., but police have not disclosed his whereabouts between leaving work and the shooting.
Tyson’s mother, Carissa Weber, spoke with him around 10 p.m., recalling a lighthearted conversation about camping plans with a friend. Tragically, about an hour later, she heard the gunshots that ended his life.
By Tuesday, investigators had identified a 2010 Chevrolet Impala believed to be connected to the case; however, no arrests have been made. Weber expressed profound sadness over her son’s death but emphasized she was not angry. “I know what kind of potential he had, and I knew he was going to go places,” she said.
Tyson’s biological father, Zach Goodsell, who had been estranged from him, also commented on the tragedy through social media, expressing grief and anger toward the person responsible. Tyson was preparing to enter his senior year at Mankato West High School this fall.
The investigation remains ongoing as authorities work to uncover more details about this devastating loss to the North Mankato community.
