Former Fox News Anchor Pleads Guilty in Mother’s Fatal Stabbing
Angelynn Mock, a former local Fox News anchor, has entered a guilty plea to first-degree murder in connection with the death of her mother, Anita Avers. The incident occurred on Halloween 2025 in Wichita, Kansas.
According to court records, Mock, 48, confessed to stabbing her 80-year-old mother multiple times with four kitchen knives and a cheese grater. Anita Avers was found unresponsive in her bed, wearing only underwear and a bra, with numerous stab wounds to her face and torso. She was transported to a hospital, where she later died from her injuries.
Police reports describe the scene as particularly disturbing. Several bloodied kitchen utensils were discovered arranged on a pillow near the victim. Mock reportedly called 911 herself, stating that her mother had tried to attack her first, prompting her to defend herself.
When officers arrived at the residence, Mock was holding a bloodied towel. She told authorities that she had entered her mother’s bedroom intending to discuss a potential job interview with a local NBC affiliate.
Mock claimed her mother was sharpening knives and became aggressive, leading to a physical altercation. She described stabbing her mother after being verbally attacked and pursued.
Anita’s husband, Barry Avers, who was at work during the incident, informed police that Mock had been living with them for several years following a job loss linked to an alcohol-related incident. He also shared that Mock had been diagnosed with a mental health disorder-initially bipolar disorder, later reclassified as schizoaffective disorder-and that the family had encouraged her to seek treatment.
During police interviews, Mock reportedly expressed conflicted feelings about her mother, describing her as “the devil” and talking to herself.
After undergoing a court-ordered competency evaluation, Mock was deemed fit to stand trial. She waived her right to a trial and is scheduled for sentencing on October 5. If convicted, she faces a life sentence with the possibility of parole after 25 years.
