George Clooney Defends Mark Ruffalos Right to Speak Out on Paramount Merger

Additional Coverage:

At the Venice Film Festival on September 2, George Clooney openly defended Mark Ruffalo amid the controversy involving Paramount’s proposed merger and Ruffalo’s outspoken criticism. Clooney, who is set to receive the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement, emphasized the importance of free speech even when opinions differ.

The dispute centers on Ruffalo’s public opposition to the merger between Paramount Skydance and Warner Bros., as well as his allegations against the Ellison family, owners of Paramount Skydance, whom he accused of being complicit in the “genocide” against Palestinians. Paramount responded by accusing Ruffalo of using antisemitic tropes.

Clooney made it clear that regardless of personal agreement, he supports Ruffalo’s right to express his views. “I support Mark Ruffalo’s ability to speak freely,” Clooney told Variety.

“We’re not going to ban speech. I believe in free speech even when I completely disagree with it.

That’s important. In fact, it’s part of how democracy works.”

He added that differing opinions are to be expected, especially in public forums, and described Ruffalo as “a good man.”

Additionally, Clooney shared his own concerns about the merger’s impact on employees, noting, “I always worry whenever big companies are consolidating because it means a lot of people are going to lose their jobs,” while acknowledging uncertainty about the deal’s outcome.

Clooney’s appearance in Venice follows a challenging summer for his family. In late July, he and his wife Amal had to evacuate their home in Brignoles, France, along with their twins, as wildfires ravaged the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur region. Though uncertain if their home survived, the Clooneys prioritized the safety of their neighbors and committed to aiding the community’s recovery, writing to the local mayor about their dedication to helping rebuild.

Thousands across southern Europe faced similar evacuations amid the wildfires, impacting parts of France and Spain. It remains unclear whether the Clooneys’ residence sustained damage.

George Clooney’s defense of free expression and his solidarity with Mark Ruffalo highlight ongoing tensions within Hollywood, set against the backdrop of personal trials and broader industry changes.
