A tragic incident unfolded aboard the Carnival Firenze cruise ship on Monday morning when a 24-year-old woman, identified as Briana Miller, died after falling from her stateroom balcony. According to sources familiar with the case, Miller was reportedly involved in an argument with her family just moments before the fatal plunge.
Carnival spokesperson Julie Leonardi confirmed the passenger’s death, noting that Miller was traveling with her family, who promptly informed the ship’s crew. “As is customary following incidents of this nature, law enforcement was present on board while the ship was docked at Catalina Island on Monday to assist with the investigation,” Leonardi said.
Kelly Duhs, a private investigator who happened to be on the ship during the incident, shared that crew members indicated Miller had been in a dispute with her family prior to her death. “It’s a heartbreaking situation,” Duhs remarked.
Authorities reported that Miller’s body was removed from the vessel on Monday, the same day her family disembarked. Later that day, FBI agents boarded the Carnival Firenze to further investigate the circumstances surrounding the tragedy.
FBI spokesperson Lourdes Arocho stated, “The FBI responded to the ship when it docked at Catalina Island on Monday and is investigating an incident on board which resulted in death. More specific details are not being provided at this time as the investigation is ongoing.”
The Carnival Firenze departed from Long Beach on Sunday and is a sizable vessel, capable of accommodating over 4,100 guests and more than 1,400 crew members. The ship, measuring 1,061 feet in length, was reportedly en route to Mexico at the time of the incident. Miller’s stateroom was one of the ship’s “Terrazza” rooms, which feature private decks and are described by Carnival as stylish and comfortable spaces for relaxation.
Leonardi added that the cruise line’s Care Team is providing support to Miller’s family during this difficult time. “Our thoughts and prayers are with them and their loved ones,” she said.
This unfortunate death marks the second fatality on a Carnival cruise ship this year. It comes just months after the death of 18-year-old Anna Kepner aboard the Carnival Horizon, a case that led to the arrest and murder charge against her 16-year-old stepbrother.
Kepner, a high school cheerleader from Florida, was found deceased in her cabin in November. Her death was ruled mechanical asphyxia, and the ongoing investigation continues to draw attention to safety and security aboard cruise ships.
The Carnival cruise line and authorities continue to work closely as the investigation into Briana Miller’s death progresses.
