Social media users are expressing confusion and discomfort over recent posts from Callista Gingrich, the Trump-appointed U.S. ambassador to Switzerland. Many describe her heavily edited selfies as unsettling and liken them to scenes from the dystopian series “Black Mirror.”
Callista, 60, has drawn attention for sharing photos that appear to be extensively airbrushed-both professional shots and family pictures. One notable image shows her standing beside her husband, Newt Gingrich, the former House Speaker, in the Swiss resort town of St.
Moritz. Observers quickly noted that while Newt, 81, looks his age, Callista’s face appears digitally altered to an almost unrecognizable degree.
Instagram users did not hold back, with some sarcastically remarking on the couple’s “beautiful and smooth” appearance, while others emphasized how Callista’s photos consistently show her face heavily edited, leaving others in the frame untouched.
“I love that she edits her face into oblivion but leaves his completely untouched,” commented Allie Voss, communications director for the American Conservation Coalition, on X. Influencer Caleb Hull echoed the sentiment, urging, “SOMEONE PLEASE STOP HER FROM EDITING PHOTOS.”
This is not the first time Callista’s use of photo editing has sparked reactions. A government video she posted earlier, featuring similarly altered visuals, prompted viewers to call her a “robot” and describe the footage as “terrifying” and “uncomfortable.” Some compared her appearance to characters from science fiction, with one user referencing “2001: A Space Odyssey” and others drawing parallels to the eerie atmosphere of “Black Mirror.”
Callista Gingrich began her role as ambassador to Switzerland last October and recently celebrated her birthday with her husband in the Alps. Before this appointment, she served as U.S. ambassador to the Vatican during the Trump administration’s first term.
Both Callista and Newt are devout Catholics-Newt converted in 2009, and Callista has been a lifelong practitioner. The couple has been together since 2000.
Following Trump’s 2024 election win, he announced Callista’s nomination for the Swiss ambassadorship, praising her previous diplomatic efforts. “During her tenure, Callista worked to advance and defend international religious freedom, combat human trafficking, and provide humanitarian assistance around the world,” Trump stated on his social media platform, Truth Social.
