At a recent Senate hearing, Senator Chris Coons questioned FBI Director Kash Patel about his widely circulated and somewhat tipsy appearance at the 2026 Winter Olympics, sparking a wave of criticism from the public.
The controversy centers on a video showing Patel drinking beer in the locker room following Team USA’s hockey victory over Canada. Patel defended his trip by explaining that it was strategically timed to coincide with the Olympics, which provided cover for a confidential mission related to national security.
During the C-SPAN-broadcast hearing, Senator Coons asked Patel, “You attended the Olympics in Milan. How much did your trip cost?
And to what extent did that help you carry out your mission as director of the FBI?” This line of questioning followed nationwide outrage over Patel’s conduct at the games.
Patel responded by emphasizing the security role the FBI and Department of Homeland Security play at major international events, stating, “We had 250,000 Americans travel to Milan. We’re proud we had zero major security incidents involving American citizens.”
He further revealed that the timing of his trip was connected to handling a high-profile cybercriminal from the Chinese Communist Party who was in Italian custody. Patel explained that his team successfully negotiated the individual’s expulsion from Italy and subsequent return to the U.S., a mission they kept under wraps.
However, social media reactions were overwhelmingly skeptical and harsh. One user dismissed Patel’s explanation with, “Right… keep telling yourself that, you f–king drunk.”
Others questioned the professionalism of those around him, with comments like, “I refuse to accept people sitting behind Kash Patel are mentally okay, look at their eyes like wtf!” Many accused Patel of fabricating excuses, pointing out that even if the covert mission were true, it did not justify the public display of drinking in the locker room.
Critics described Patel’s justification as a “cover story built out of coincidence,” highlighting the discrepancy between his behavior and his responsibilities. Some expressed outright disbelief, while others referenced recent reports from The Atlantic, which detailed concerns about Patel’s excessive drinking and unexplained absences, raising doubts about his fitness for duty.
Senator Chris Van Hollen pressed Patel on these issues, stating, “You cannot perform those public duties if you’re incapacitated,” and cited reports of Patel being so intoxicated that staff had to force entry into his home. Patel fired back, accusing Van Hollen of inappropriate conduct during a meeting with a deported individual, a charge Van Hollen denies.
Regarding the cost of Patel’s trip, reports indicate that his travel on a government Gulfstream jet to Milan amounted to roughly $75,000 in taxpayer expenses. The backlash intensified after footage emerged of Patel celebrating with the U.S. men’s hockey team, raising questions about the appropriateness of his conduct during an official government mission.
As the controversy continues, scrutiny remains on Patel’s ability to balance his official duties with his personal behavior, and on the use of public funds for his Olympic visit.
