Helping those overcome fear in Las Vegas valley Asian community after recent string of home invasions

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — This week, the 8 News Now Investigators first reported a recent string of violent home invasions targeting Asian households. It’s sparking new fears amongst the Las Vegas Asian community, with worries about other attacks or if they could be the next target.

“It’s dread honestly. My own family is Filipino and we all live in different places and it’s hard to keep track of everyone,” Nyla Marquez said.

Marquez said these types of incidents make one lose their sense of safety and privacy altogether.

“Your first thought is concern of your own family,” Marquez added.

Nicole Santero is a board member for the OCA-Asian Pacific American Advocates, Las Vegas chapter, a civil rights organization focusing on helping the Asian community. She said while there is a history of vulnerability and humility in Asian culture, people shouldn’t have to live in fear.

“For any individual that’s targeted, it’s so hurtful when there’s no one there to help or stand with them so when we see something, we have to speak up so showing our support isn’t just helpful but it can be potentially life-changing,” Santero explained.
