HONOLULU (KHON2) — Nearly five months after floodwaters from the March Kona low storms swept through Mānoa, sending cars floating down streets and damaging homes, schools and businesses, crews are beginning a major effort to reduce the risk of it happening again.
Beginning Monday, the City and County of Honolulu’s Department of Facility Maintenance and the Hawaiʻi Department of Transportation will launch a months-long stream maintenance and flood mitigation project along Mānoa Stream.

The work will focus on removing sediment, vegetation, trees, rocks and other debris that officials said have created bottlenecks in the stream, restricting water flow during heavy rain.
“This is a joint collaboration between the city and state at all levels,” HDOT Director Ed Sniffen said. “The biggest issue we heard from the community was flooding, and both DOT and DFM committed that we would clear this stream.”…
