Social media ‘influencer’ scams cost Hawaii residents thousands

HONOLULU (KHON2) — We have all heard the warning not to trust everything we see online, but that is getting harder when the person recommending a product sounds qualified, looks real and may have thousands of followers.

According to the local Better Business Bureau, some social media influencers are legitimate and follow advertising rules while others hide that they are being paid, promote products they have never used, or use artificial intelligence to create fake experts and endorsements.
