Flames inside the beach park bathroom broke out around 10:30 p.m. and quickly spread to the roof causing significant damage, per Honolulu Parks & Recreation Spokesperson, Nate Serota.

“That facility will most likely have to be closed for an extended period of time,” said Serota, unsure of exactly how long it will be closed to the public.

It’s the second time in a week a park bathroom burned down following a fire at Kamamalu Neighborhood Park.

“Vandalism is really just a senseless crime,” stated Serota. “That’s a resource that’s lost to the entire community. It’s a loss for everyone.”

Vandalism is a problem the City faces every day, but the Parks and Recreation Department said its preventative efforts are helping. According to Serota, almost all the City’s parks have closure hours when facilities are locked at night. Neighborhood watches have also been established along with the installation of surveillance cameras near public restrooms.
