Houston man sentenced to federal prison for illegal reentry

HOUSTON, Texas — A 33-year-old man living illegally in Houston has been sentenced to federal prison for reentering the United States without authorization, according to Acting U.S. Attorney John G.E. Marck.

Luis Miguel Sanchez-Martinez, who pleaded guilty on February 19, has been ordered by U.S. District Judge Sim Lake to serve 42 months in federal prison. As he is not a U.S. citizen, Sanchez-Martinez is expected to face removal proceedings following his imprisonment. The court considered his dangerous behavior, lack of respect for the law, and need for further deterrence in determining the sentence.

Sanchez-Martinez has multiple convictions for driving under the influence of alcohol. Authorities first removed him from the United States in November 2020 following his third DUI conviction. He was removed again after a fourth DUI, but law enforcement found him in Houston on August 9, 2024, without authorization to be in the country…
