Ex-Gurley police officer pleads guilty in deadly 2023 wreck during police pursuit

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) —  A former Gurley police officer charged in a deadly 2023 wreck during a police pursuit has pleaded guilty, according to the Madison County District Attorney’s Office.

The DA’s office said Christopher Whalen pleaded guilty to criminally negligent homicide on Thursday, a lesser charge than he was originally facing. He will face two years of state probation and serve a year in jail if he violates probation.

Whalen was charged with reckless manslaughter in the death of Matthew Norwood, who was killed from injuries sustained during a wreck near the intersection of Interstate 565 and Jordan Lane, according to ALEA…
