Huntsville police to hold safety checkpoint April 17 targeting impaired driving

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — The Huntsville Police Department’s DUI Task Force will hold a traffic safety checkpoint Friday, April 17, as part of its ongoing effort to deter impaired driving and reduce crashes across the city.

Officials say the checkpoint is part of HPD’s continued focus on roadway safety, with officers looking for impaired drivers and other potential violations, including drug and firearm-related offenses.

“Our first safety checkpoint of 2026 resulted in eight arrests within the first 2½ hours,” HPD DUI Task Force Sgt. Antonio Shorter said. “That kind of result shows why these operations matter. We are able to quickly identify dangerous drivers, remove them from the roadway and help prevent serious crashes before they happen.”…
