ALABAMA (WHNT) — An Alabama attorney general candidate is weighing in on the high-profile case of a former Decatur police officer charged with murder, and those comments have drawn a critical response from a North Alabama district attorney.
Candidate Jay Mitchell, who is a former Alabama Supreme Court Justice, is calling on the Alabama Attorney General to end the prosecution of former Decatur Police Officer Mac Marquette. Marquette is charged with killing Stephen Perkins during a botched car repossession in 2023.

Mitchell made those comments in an op-ed he wrote for Yellowhammer News, where he said the current Attorney General’s Office has a “war on good cops.”
“It’s very tragic about what happened there, there’s no question about that,” Mitchell said. “But Officer Marquette is now being prosecuted for following his training.”…
