INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (WXIX) – Four new Indiana laws will take effect July 1, including measures that criminalize sleeping on public property, require law enforcement to comply with federal immigration detainer requests, authorize a state military police force and ban student cellphone use in schools.
Homelessness and public property
Senate Enrolled Act 2-85 makes it a misdemeanor to use unauthorized public land for camping, sleeping or long-term shelter.
The law allows emergency detention if weather is extremely hot or cold and individuals have refused to go to a shelter. Those who do not qualify for emergency detention would be given a warning.
If they are found again in the same spot 48 hours later, they would be charged with a misdemeanor, which could result in up to 60 days in jail and a $500 fine.
Immigration enforcement
