Commissioner Gipson defends comments on Sharia law

JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) – Faith leaders called on Commissioner of Agriculture and Commerce Andy Gipson (R-Miss.) to retract his statements on banning Sharia law if elected governor, calling them misleading and inflammatory. Gipson told WJTV 12 News that he won’t back away from his stance to ban Sharia law.

Working Together Mississippi and Working Together Jackson gathered at the International Museum of Muslim Cultures on August 14, 2026. They denounced his post, which asked Mississippians if they’re aware of a center for Muslim culture at the Planetarium in Jackson.
