Crews repair multiple heat-buckled roads across the metro since June

JACKSON, Miss. (WLBT) – Crews have repaired multiple heat-buckled roads across the metro since June, according to the Mississippi Department of Transportation.

“We had an issue on Highway 18 in June on Sowell Rd. Highway 55 at Highway 463 in Madison around July,” said Michael Flood, MDOT.

Just last week, that included I-20 eastbound and I-55 South near Terry.

Why roads buckle

“What happens is that over time, with extreme heat, concrete can expand, and it will expand past the point that it was designed. We do design these roads to give them extra space to expand during extreme heat, but sometimes they just heat up beyond that point, which causes the road to buckle up or blow out,” Flood said…
