Mississippi highway projects advance across Madison, Hinds and Rankin counties

Major pavement restoration along U.S. 49 and multi-bridge replacements along U.S. 51 are underway in Madison County, state transportation officials announced today.

The local upgrades are part of an extensive wave of central Mississippi highway improvements, which also includes a pending $400 million overhaul of the Interstate 20 and Interstate 55 freight corridors across the greater Jackson area.

In Madison County, work has started on an $18.6 million contract awarded to APAC-MS to restore pavement along U.S. 49 from the Hinds County line to the Yazoo County line. The project features Intelligent Transportation Systems technology installed from Northside Drive to 500 feet north of the Madison County line to deliver real-time driver updates. Crews are clearing trees from rights of way, repairing failed roadway sections and cross drains, upgrading guardrails, and completing bridge joint and epoxy repairs.
