One person was killed after a fast-moving but powerful storm tore across New Jersey on Friday evening, July 3, leaving tens of thousands without electricity and forcing road closures across the state. As of Sunday morning, July 5, utility crews were still working to restore power to more than 112,000 customers served by JCP&L and PSE&G, following a second storm on July 4.
Scotch Plains Mayor Josh Losardo confirmed the fatality in the Union County township but did not release additional details.
“Last night’s storm was brief but incredibly powerful, and it brought tragedy to our community,” Losardo said. ”We have received confirmation of one fatality, and on behalf of the Township, I extend our deepest condolences to the family who has suffered this heartbreaking loss.
