Deputies look for suspect after police chase near Paw Paw

PAW PAW TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — Detectives are looking for a suspect they say led them on a vehicle chase before running away on foot in Kalamazoo County.

Around 12:15 p.m. Wednesday, detectives with the Van Buren County Narcotics Unit tried to pull a suspect over who they thought had been involved in the sale of methamphetamine. It happened on County Road 665 near Valley Drive in Paw Paw. Deputies say the suspect, who was on parole, pulled into an apartment complex and “jumped his car off an embankment to elude officers.”

The vehicle led deputies north, then east into Mattawan and then Kalamazoo County. Shortly into Kalamazoo County, deputies stopped chasing the vehicle.

It was later found abandoned and both the driver and passenger ran into the woods on foot. K-9 officers with Western Michigan University Police tried to find the driver but could not. Based on interviews and evidence, detectives identified the driver and will be submitting for charges, according to the Van Buren County Sheriff’s Office.
