Downs pushes Colon to home win with big fourth quarter

COLON — Burr Oak and Colon were tied midway through the fourth quarter on Thursday evening.

The Bobcats and Magi had played a physical game and Colon senior Maverick Downs had drawn four fouls to that point. But in the final handful of minutes, the Magi senior was able to take the game over offensively.

“Mav had some foul trouble and had to sit quite a bit, but we knew by the end of the third that we had to do something,” Colon coach Steve Vinson said following the game. “He ended up being the difference for us in that fourth quarter. He stepped up and hit some big shots.”

Downs scored 12 of his 14 points in the fourth quarter and helped push Colon to a 52-42 home victory.

“I thought our guys stepped up when we needed them to late in the game,” Vinson said. “We changed up the offense there late in the game, we went to our triangle, and Mav does a good job shooting that shot from the short corner.”

The first quarter was not very pretty offensively. Colon led 12-6 early in the contest and both teams scored only eight points in the second quarter, giving the Magi a 20-14 edge.
