Historic Green Duck Tavern catches fire near 26th and Prospect

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) – Kansas City firefighters are working a fire at the Green Duck near 26th Street and Prospect Avenue after a police officer called it in just before 7 p.m. Sunday.

Crews arrived to heavy fire and thick smoke coming from the two-story, unoccupied building. Firefighters initially went inside with multiple hoselines, but the fire was too intense and they were pulled out. Crews are now fighting the fire from the outside using ladder trucks.

No injuries have been reported, and the fire is contained to that one building. Fire crews expect to be on scene for several more hours.

Kansas City Mayor Quinton Lucas said on Facebook, “The old Green Duck Tavern building has seen a lot, including a challenge today. I appreciate the quick work of Kansas City’s Bravest at the Kansas City Fire Department to put out the blaze. Hearing thus far that folks are safe. More updates as warranted.”…
