Kansas City medical respite facility set for $6 million renovation and expansion

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) – A Kansas City organization that provides medical care to people experiencing homelessness is kicking off a $6 million renovation and expansion of its Carehouse medical respite facility — the only one of its kind in the city.

Care Beyond the Boulevard will host a Carehouse Kickoff Event Monday, June 29, from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. at 5100 E. Linwood Blvd. to officially mark the beginning of construction.

About Carehouse

Carehouse provides a safe place for people experiencing homelessness to recover after being discharged from the hospital. The facility offers wound care, physical therapy, psychiatry, and medication-assisted treatment.

The facility currently has 16 usable rooms. When renovations are complete, Carehouse will expand to 39 rooms — 26 medical respite beds and 13 low-barrier shelter beds.

“I started seeing people who were being dismissed from hospitals with complex wounds, with trachs, with peg tubes, with medical conditions that needed more care,” said KK Assmann, founder and CEO of Care Beyond the Boulevard. “But because they didn’t have insurance or because their insurance wouldn’t pay for them to go to a skilled care facility, they were being dismissed to the streets, which further complicates their health, makes it more difficult for them to heal.”

Renovation details

The expansion will also add ADA-compliant rooms, a commercial kitchen, and additional exam space. A lift will be installed to improve accessibility, as the building currently has no elevator…
